Music at the Old Parish

Music has been an integral part of Christian Worship down through the centuries, and The Old Parish Church of Peebles is proud to continue to be part of that tradition.

We are fortunate to have in Andrew Russel  - our Organist and Choirmaster -  a talented musician who is breathing new life into the choral and other musical aspects of the church.

If you thought church music was just about solemn organ music and traditional old hymns, think again. These serve their purposes from time to time, but today's church enjoys a rich variety of music, much of it lively and upbeat.

Within the last two years alone, the Old Parish has welcomed musical contributions such as people singing songs from today's charts, singing blues, playing guitar, piano, trumpet, bagpipes, violin, percussion, a band playing Metallica and Eric Clapton songs, Choristers singing Westlife to a proper backing track, the Choir and Choristers singing Monty Python and so on.

Our junior singers - The TOP (The Old Parish) Choristers - are increasing their repertoire of modern and contemporary songs, and play an active part in the first service of each month during school term time. Click here for more information about the Choristers.

Our Choir is growing and always welcomes new members, either for rehearsal evenings alone or for full participation. Click here to find out more about the Choir.

Both last year and this year the Old Parish enjoyed the musical talents of pupils from Peebles High School, and it is very much hoped that pupils will continue to come and play or sing in the church. Initially some of the pupils thought that only certain types of music would be appropriate, but the 21st century church is a good deal more open-minded than many people realise, and we’re always looking for new ideas!

Singers and instrumentalists from all backgrounds are always welcome to make contributions to our services. If you have an idea you'd like to put forward, you can email Andrew Russel see panel at RHS

Wedding Music

The music at weddings these days varies widely according to taste, but it’s important that the couple get to choose their music. If you’re planning your wedding and want to discuss music, contact Andrew Russel. by email -see panel at RHS.
